Advent Devotions 2021

Yohan and Baby Yohan

One of the greatest gifts I ever received was actually a decoration for the tree under which our gifts would be placed.

When I was 12 years old my parents divorced.  Two homes also meant two Christmases along with every other holiday.

When it came time to put up the tree, my dad went out and bought a bunch of new ornaments for our new tradition. Among the ornaments were a bunch of small wooden pieces.  We jokingly named two of them Yohan and Baby Yohan.

One year when we opened the box Yohan was broken!

As a 13-year-old boy I decided to “fix” it.  I put a screw through the bottom to secure Yohan’s head on tight.  The screw I used was too big and caused the ornament to split.  I wrapped it in scotch tape to “fix” it again.

Yohan & Baby Yohan don’t hang on my tree any more.  Now they sit out year round as a reminder of brokenness fixed.  Not so much broken ornaments as my family brokenness that was being put back together in new ways at Christmas over the years.
