God's Miracles Are Born Every Day

As I read the pre-advent church bible assignment of John, I pondered how God used a disabled man to show His glory. In Life Lessons from John, Max Lucado posed this question, “When have you seen a person’s disability used for God’s glory?”

My granddaughter was born with a rare, and at the time mostly fatal, heart defect. Hannah managed to survive surgery but not before suffering severe brain trauma. As a result, she lived her life of 13-years wheelchair-bound, tube-fed, speechless, and without meaningful movement. The neurologist had even told her parents that she had suffered an injury from which she would probably not live and if she did survive, she would exist in a vegetative state, neither smiling at nor recognizing her parents. Through no small miracle, Hannah Page Wright not only lived but thrived.

Hannah loved people, especially children, and they knew it despite her extremely limited movement and the ability to make few sounds. She made friends with the children on her school bus and touched the lives of those she encountered. Her smile completely disarmed adults who may have felt discomfort from being around someone who was “different.” She commanded people to touch her or hold her hand. And, even strangers obeyed, which in turn made her smile that much more. In a miraculous way she reminded people of the importance of touching and being touched – loving and being loved.
